Sadly, Ethel Barrymore today may be better known as the great aunt of actress-producer Drew Barrymore, who was born in 1975 -- 16 years after Ethel’s death. But in her lifetime, Ethel was the equal of her famous acting siblings, John and Lionel Barrymore.

Ethel Barrymore the Middle Child of a Legendary Family

She was born Ethel Mae Blythe in Philadelphia in 1879, the daughter of famed 19th century actors Herbert Blythe (who used the stage name Maurice Barrymore) and Georgiana Drew. The extended acting family included Ethel’s well-known uncles, Broadway matinee idol John Drew and silent film star Sidney Drew.

As a young woman, Ethel was extraordinarily beautiful. Although her face noticeably hardened as she aged, Barrymore’s striking, soulful eyes were capable of expressing myriad emotions

Because her parents were frequently on tour, Ethel and her brothers were often cared for by their maternal grandmother, Louisa Lane Drew. At six, Ethel was sent to a convent boarding school.

Seven years later, Georgiana Drew withdrew her daughter and took her to California. Ethel’s mother hoped the warmer climate would help her tuberculosis. Instead, Georgiana Drew died there a few months later – and 13-year-old Ethel Barrymore was left to make arrangements for shipping her mother’s body home to Philadelphia.

Barrymore Makes Debut With Philadelphia Stage Company

In 1894, 15-year-old Ethel made her stage debut with a Philadelphia stage company run by her grandmother, Louisa. Ethel's Broadway debut came the next year, in The Imprudent Young Couple, which co-starred her uncle John Drew and 19th century stage icon Maude Adams. The next year, the three again appeared together, in Rosemary.

After appearing for a time on the London stage, Barrymore returned to New York for her first Broadway lead, in 1901’s Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines. It led to a four-decade New York stage career – during which she arguably became the leading actress of her generation. In 1928, she opened the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, named in her honor, with the production The Kingdom of God.
